The Percentage of Trees Bearing Cones as a Predictor for Annual Longleaf Pine Cone Production

چکیده
The U.S. Forest Service has monitored longleaf pine cone production at sites throughout the southeastern United States for over 60 years. Data from multi-decadal surveys have supported our understanding of variability stand-level as it relates to environmental and ecological processes, more broadly, how operates a masting species. Cones are counted each spring using visual that follow standard protocol. Rapid mast assessments been proposed in literature an alternative traditional methods, yet these approaches not examined pine. In this study, I compared average (using method) percentage trees bearing cones (rapid assessment) understand relationship between two measurements. 29 years data 18 cone-monitoring containing 234 trees. Using simple linear models, discovered explained 58–94% variance log-average across all sites. One-way ANOVA analysis revealed crops required successful regeneration (25 + per tree) occurred when exceeded 90%, results study underscore utility 90% threshold determining crop. While cone-count methods should be abandoned, advocate use rapid cone-crop proxy approach is suitable.

Longleaf Pine Seedling Production
Longleaf pine is a highly desirable species, resisting fire, insects and pathogens, and produces quality solid-wood products, but regeneration of the species has been difficult. Natural regeneration is feasible only on a small portion of the area considered to be longleaf pine type. Therefore, artificial regeneration must become a reliable means of regenerating the species if restoration of the...

Sporadic temporal patterns of seed production are a challenge for the regeneration and restoration of longleaf pine, which is a keystone component of an endangered ecosystem in the southeastern United States. In this study, long-term data for longleaf pine cone production, collected at six sites across the southeastern region, was examined from the perspective of information entropy. Our result...
متن کاملAnalyzing the complexity of cone production in longleaf pine by multiscale entropy
The longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) forests are important ecosystems in the southeastern USA because of their ecological and economic value. Since European settlement, longleaf pine ecosystems have dramatically declined in extent, to the degree that they are now listed as endangered ecosystems. Its sporadic seed production, which limits the frequency of natural regeneration, is identified...
